Night Encounters: Facilitating Encounters with Jesus

More Than Singing and Teaching

A camp worship service can be memorable. But at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, the goal of a Night Encounter is something deeper than simply leading songs or presenting a message.

We want to create space for campers to personally encounter Jesus.

That does not mean trying to manufacture an emotional experience or create a particular response. The presence of God is not something a leader has to produce. Instead, our role is to help remove distractions and create an environment where campers can turn their attention toward Him.

Night Encounters are designed around this simple purpose: helping people engage with Jesus personally and together as a community.

For young people, these moments can become significant parts of their camp experience. Away from the distractions of everyday life, they have an opportunity to slow down, worship, listen, pray, and respond to God.

Guiding the Journey Toward God’s Presence

At Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, we think of a Night Encounter as a guided journey.

A leader needs to know where the group is going, understand the purpose of each part of the meeting, and provide opportunities for campers to participate. But the leader is not responsible for creating the encounter. Jesus is.

This distinction matters.

Our meetings are not a formula for experiencing God. They are a framework that helps bring a group together and provide direction for the evening.

Each meeting has a clear invitation or “rallying point.” The group is encouraged to move toward that shared purpose together rather than expecting every individual to have the same experience.

Sometimes one camper may worship through singing. Another may pray quietly. Someone else may simply sit and reflect. There is freedom in how people respond.

The goal is not to make everyone respond in the same way. The goal is to help everyone have an opportunity to engage with Jesus.

Creating Room for a Personal Response

One of the most important principles of Night Encounters is that campers should be invited rather than pressured.

We believe there is a significant difference between creating space for someone to respond to God and telling them what their response should look like.

At Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, our worship environment makes room for a variety of responses. Campers may raise their hands, sing, pray, kneel, sit quietly, journal, or simply remain still. We do not want outward expression to become a measure of someone’s spiritual maturity or the authenticity of their relationship with God.

Instead, we want young people to discover that they can come honestly before Jesus.

This is especially important as campers grow. A child may respond differently than a teenager, and a teenager may experience worship differently from a young adult. Mature leaders help provide guidance while allowing the Holy Spirit to work without manipulation or pressure.

Ultimately, the purpose of a Night Encounter is not to create an impressive camp meeting. It is to help campers recognize the invitation of Jesus and respond to Him personally.

When the meeting ends, our hope is that they understand something that can remain with them long after summer camp: Jesus is not limited to this place. He invites us to encounter Him, know Him, and walk with Him every day.
