Discipleship Is More Than a Camp Week

For many young people, summer camp can become one of the most meaningful weeks of the year. There are new friendships, outdoor adventures, worship, laughter, challenging conversations, and opportunities to step away from the normal routines of home and school. But at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, we believe the most important part of camp begins when the camper goes home. A powerful week at camp is not the finish line. It can be a starting point. Our desire is to help young people understand that following Jesus is not something we do only at church or during a Christian summer camp. It is a daily way of life.

Jesus’ invitation is simple: “Come to Me.” But coming to Jesus is only the beginning. We are then invited to follow Him. That means discipleship continues on Monday morning, at school, around the dinner table, with friends, and in the ordinary decisions of everyday life.

Learning to Walk With Jesus

Walking with Jesus means learning to recognize that our relationship with Him affects every part of our lives.

It affects how we treat other people.

It affects how we respond when we are disappointed.

It affects what we do when nobody is watching.

It affects how we handle conflict, temptation, success, failure, friendships, and responsibility.

At Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, we want campers to have opportunities to practice these things in a supportive community. They learn through Scripture and teaching. They learn through worship and prayer. They learn through conversations with counselors and mentors. They learn through serving others, working together, making decisions, and navigating challenges.

Sometimes discipleship happens during a scheduled activity.

Sometimes it happens around a meal.

Sometimes it happens in a quiet conversation with a counselor.

Sometimes it happens when a camper has to decide whether to encourage someone, forgive someone, take responsibility, or ask for help.

These ordinary moments matter because following Jesus happens in ordinary moments too.

From Campers to Disciples

One of the goals of discipleship is that young people gradually take greater ownership of their faith. As children grow, they need opportunities to ask deeper questions, make wise decisions, serve others, and discover what it means to live out their faith personally. That is why Shepherd’s Fold Ranch has developed an age-specific discipleship pathway.

Younger campers begin by learning foundational truths about God, His love, and their identity in Jesus. As they grow, they encounter opportunities to explore character, relationships, influence, responsibility, and leadership. Eventually, older students are challenged to become examples for others. The progression is intentional. We want young people to move from simply hearing about Jesus to following Jesus, and eventually to helping others follow Him too.

That is especially important as students move toward adulthood. A mature disciple does not depend on a camp environment to maintain their faith. They learn to seek Jesus wherever they are. They begin to understand that Scripture is not simply something they hear at a camp session. It is something they live. Prayer is not simply an activity. It becomes part of their relationship with God. Worship is not limited to a scheduled gathering. It becomes a response to who God is. Serving is not simply something they do when assigned. It becomes part of how they love other people. This is the kind of lifelong growth we hope to encourage at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch.

A Faith That Continues After Camp

Every summer, campers eventually pack their bags and head home. The campgrounds become quiet. The activities end. New friends return to their communities. But discipleship does not have to end. Our hope is that campers take something deeper home with them: a desire to keep walking with Jesus.

For some, that may mean beginning a relationship with Him. For others, it may mean returning home with a renewed commitment to prayer, Scripture, worship, or serving others. And for some, it may eventually lead them back to Shepherd’s Fold Ranch as a counselor, mentor, or leader who gets to invest in the next generation. That is one of the beautiful things about discipleship. What begins in one person’s life can eventually become part of someone else’s story.

A camper becomes a leader.

A student becomes a mentor.

A disciple becomes someone who helps make disciples.

That is the larger vision behind Christian summer camp at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch. We want to help young people encounter Jesus, grow in their relationship with Him, and discover that following Him is not simply something they did one summer.

It is a way of life.
