The Greenhouse Model of Discipleship

Camp Is a Place to Grow

A greenhouse creates an environment where plants can grow. It provides the right conditions, care, attention, and protection so that something small can develop into something strong and healthy. At Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, we think about discipleship in a similar way. Camp is a greenhouse.

We are not trying to manufacture spiritual growth in a young person’s life. Instead, we want to create an environment where young people can encounter Jesus, learn His Word, build meaningful relationships, and develop habits that help them continue growing long after camp is over.

That is why we don’t see summer camp as simply one exciting week of activities. Camp is part of a much bigger story. A young person’s faith is a lifelong journey, and our role is to help nurture that journey during the time God has entrusted them to us.

Sowing, Watering, and Nurturing

Spiritual growth takes time. The apostle Paul described ministry using the picture of planting and watering. Different people may have different roles, but ultimately, God is the one who gives the growth. That perspective shapes how we approach discipleship at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch.

We sow through teaching God’s Word. We water through relationships, prayer, worship, encouragement, and daily conversations. We nurture young people by providing opportunities to ask questions, practice what they are learning, and discover what it means to follow Jesus.

Sometimes growth also requires pruning. As young people mature, they encounter attitudes, habits, fears, and ideas that need to be challenged. Our goal is not to shame them for these things. Instead, we want to help them recognize what does not lead them toward Jesus and learn to choose a better path. This is one reason relationships matter so much at camp.

Counselors, mentors, and staff members have the opportunity to model what it looks like to follow Jesus. Campers see faith lived out through ordinary moments, from meals and conversations to activities, worship, prayer, and serving others.

Growing Beyond the Week at Camp

The ultimate goal of a greenhouse is not to keep a plant inside forever. In the same way, the goal of Christian summer camp is not simply to create a meaningful experience that ends when the camper goes home. We want to help young people become disciples who continue walking with Jesus in everyday life.

That means taking what they learn at camp back into their homes, schools, churches, friendships, and communities. For some campers, camp may be the place where they first begin asking serious questions about faith. For others, it may be a place where an existing relationship with Jesus becomes deeper. Still others may discover a calling to serve, lead, or help disciple someone else. Each camper’s journey is different. Our responsibility is to faithfully provide an environment where that growth can happen.

At Shepherd’s Fold Ranch, we believe the best measure of camp is not simply what happens during the week. It is what happens afterward.

  • Did a young person continue seeking Jesus?
  • Did they begin reading Scripture?
  • Did they learn to pray?
  • Did they become more confident in their identity in Christ?
  • Did they begin serving others?
  • Did they become the kind of disciple who can eventually help someone else follow Jesus?

Those are the kinds of questions that shape our ministry. Camp is the greenhouse, but the goal is growth that continues far beyond the greenhouse.
