Learning How to Meet with God

One of the goals of Shepherd’s Fold Ranch is not simply to create meaningful spiritual moments during a week of camp. We want to help campers develop a relationship with Jesus that continues when they return home.

That is the purpose behind the Morning Encounter Model.

Many young people want to spend time with God but may not know where to begin. They may understand that prayer and Scripture are important, yet struggle to develop consistency or know how to make those practices personal.

Morning Encounter gives campers a practical model for connecting with God. Leaders provide instruction and guidance, but the goal is not for campers to depend on someone else to facilitate their relationship with Jesus. Instead, they are given tools they can use on their own.

The focus is on helping each camper take greater ownership of their faith.

Creating Space for Worship, Scripture, Prayer, and Reflection

The Morning Encounter Model introduces several ways campers can intentionally spend time with God.

  • Community helps campers understand how God designed us to live in relationship with others. Faith is personal, but it was never meant to be isolated.
  • Worship gives campers an opportunity to respond to who God is and what He has done. It helps shift their attention away from distractions and toward the Lord.
  • Scripture provides the foundation for understanding God’s character, His truth, and His direction for our lives. Campers are encouraged not simply to read the Bible, but to consider how they should respond to what God is teaching them.
  • Prayer is presented as an ongoing conversation with God. He is not simply someone we approach with a list of requests. He invites us into relationship.
  • Journaling provides another way for campers to reflect, ask questions, record what they are learning, and look back over their spiritual journey.

The model may look different from day to day, but the purpose remains the same: creating intentional space to encounter God.

Moving from Instruction to Personal Ownership

During Morning Encounter, leaders act more as facilitators than lecturers.

Campers first receive guidance about a particular spiritual discipline. They learn what it is, why it matters, and how they can use it in their own relationship with God. Then they are given space to put that instruction into practice.

This process may include individual time in Scripture, prayer, worship, journaling, or quiet reflection. Afterward, campers gather again to discuss what they learned and encourage one another.

The goal is not to manufacture a particular emotional experience. Every camper’s encounter with God may look different. What matters is helping young people learn how to intentionally seek Him and respond to His truth.

By giving campers practical tools and opportunities to use them, Morning Encounter helps move discipleship beyond camp programming and into daily life.

Our hope is that campers leave Shepherd’s Fold Ranch knowing that they do not need to wait for the next worship service or summer camp to spend meaningful time with Jesus. They can seek Him wherever they are.
