Mentorship and Spiritual Role Models

Discipleship at summer camp

Faith Is Often Caught Before It Is Taught

Children and teenagers learn in many ways, but some of life’s most important lessons are learned by watching others. We believe that spiritual growth happens through both teaching and example. While campers hear messages, study Scripture, and participate in worship, they are also constantly observing the people around them. They watch how leaders respond to challenges. They notice how counselors treat others. They observe how mature believers worship, serve, pray, and live out their faith.

For this reason, mentorship is one of the most valuable aspects of the camp experience. A godly example can often reinforce a biblical truth in ways that a lesson alone cannot. When young people see authentic faith demonstrated in everyday life, they begin to understand what following Jesus looks like beyond the walls of a church or camp meeting.

The Power of Consistent Relationships

Shepherd’s Fold Ranch was designed to be more than a place where campers attend for a week and then disappear until the following summer. Our ministry model emphasizes long-term relationships that support spiritual growth over time. Many campers return year after year, developing connections with counselors, staff members, and mentors who encourage them through multiple stages of life.

One of the unique strengths of our community is that many leaders were once campers themselves. They understand the challenges, questions, and experiences that younger campers face because they have walked a similar path. These relationships create opportunities for meaningful conversations about faith, identity, leadership, and following Jesus. Often, some of the most impactful moments happen outside scheduled activities during meals, cabin discussions, outdoor adventures, or quiet conversations throughout the day. Discipleship has always been relational. Jesus invested deeply in His disciples, and we believe meaningful mentorship continues to play an important role in spiritual formation today.

Becoming the Next Generation of Leaders

Healthy mentorship does more than encourage growth in the present. It helps prepare young people to influence others in the future.

One of the goals of Shepherd’s Fold Ranch is to raise up leaders who will continue serving, mentoring, and discipling others. As campers mature, they begin moving from receiving guidance to providing it. Programs like Forerunner and The Furnace help students develop leadership skills, spiritual maturity, and a heart for serving others. They learn that leadership is not about recognition or status. It is about faithfully helping others grow closer to Christ.

This cycle of mentorship has shaped the culture of Shepherd’s Fold Ranch for years. Former campers become leaders. Leaders invest in the next generation. The next generation grows into mentors themselves. Through these relationships, faith is strengthened, character is developed, and discipleship continues from one generation to the next.
