How to Choose a Summer Camp, Part 5

GreatSchools wrote an article discussing ten questions you should consider when choosing a summer camp for your child. In the article, the GreatSchools staff mention the American Camp Association, which is community of camp professionals who, for 100 years, have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs.

Shepherd’s Fold Ranch is currently undergoing the ACA accreditation process. We are very excited to become a part of this great organization.

The questions from the GreatSchools article are broken into several posts into several different posts. Below is Part 5 of the questions the GreatSchools article suggests being asked before signing up to a summer camp. I have answered the questions for SFR. Feel free to contact the office 918.263.3622 with any further questions. The SFR team is happy to help!

9. Will the camp be transporting the children?devona

SFR only provides transportation for day campers. At no time does SFR provide transportation for overnight campers.

The Day Camper Shuttle is driven by SFR trained staff. The training includes both classroom and behind-the-wheel training. All passengers are required to wear seatbelts when the vehicle is running (even if it is in the ‘park’ position). Campers are given a Passenger Orientation that includes rules for riding and emergency procedures. The Day Camp Shuttle is always equipped with a fully-stocked emergency first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflectors.

10. Ask for references.

Finally and most important, get the names of parents with children the same age who have attended the camp. While it’s true that a director is likely to give you the names of campers who had good experiences, you’ll be able to get a fuller view of the camp by asking the right questions, says ACA President Ann Sheets.

“Ask ‘Is there anything you didn’t like about the camp?’ And let your child talk to their child, too,” she says.
